Steak and Chips Pie

For the Steak Filling

  • 800 g lean diced stewing steak (all visible fat removed)
  • 2 medium onions, diced
  • 3 carrots, peeled and sliced into chunks
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 beef stock cubes (or stock pots, made up with 600 ml boiling water)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (or mixed herbs)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornflour (mixed with a little cold water, optional for thickening – ~0.5 SV)

For the Chip Topping

  • 750 g potatoes (Maris Piper or King Edward work best)
  • Low-calorie cooking spray
  • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs (or paprika/garlic granules, optional)
  • Pinch of salt & pepper

Optional Extras

  • 1 tsp English mustard stirred into the gravy (0.5 SV)
  • 40 g reduced-fat grated cheddar on top before serving (use as Healthy Extra A or ~4 SV)
